After completing the Phurba, I returned to the workshop to create something more culinary-oriented: the cleaver. As a blade form, the cleaver offers a wide surface that offers an opportunity to experiment with texture, weight, and balance.

To bring depth and visual complexity to the blade, I forged it from Nitro V high carbon stainless steel, preserving the raw, hammered texture from the forging process. Rather than grinding the surface away, I left the finish untouched, allowing the natural marks of forging to remain.

To contrast this surface, I polished the cutting edge to a near mirror-finish, creating an eye-catching shift in tone and sheen across the blade. Towards the titanium bolster, the knife transitions from the cold bluish finish of the blade to the warmer tones of wood, ivory, and titanium. The tang is enclosed by a sculpted titanium bolster that bridges the shift from the blade's cold tones to the warmer palette of the wa-handle. The handle is made of sculpted jackfruit wood to highlight its soft warmth, and is accented with a polished fossil mammoth ivory spacer that adds a sense of refinement to the piece.

The result is a cleaver that balances rugged strength and fine detail. It celebrates the forging involved in its creation while introducing a level of sophistication through thoughtful material pairing and craftsmanship.

A familiar silhouette, reimagined through form and finish! Hoping to bring more of this into my future projects.
